In December, Abu Dhabi will host the Land Rover 4x4 in Schools Technology Challenge for the first time. The Land Rover 4x4 in Schools World Finals will showcases top young engineering talent from around the world. 25 teams of students from 17 countries aged from 13 to 19 years will be competing for the World Champions title of the prestigious competition.

In the challenge, teams design and build miniature model 4x4 vehicles that must prove their capabilities on a rugged obstacle course. From developing a body shell and engineering a chassis to coding electronics for sensors and creating a portfolio, the students put in hundreds of hours of work. They first win their National Finals to secure a place at the World Finals, where they compete with the top talent from around the globe.

The teams will travel to Abu Dhabi for a unique educational experience, which will also include cultural activities. The first stop for the students is Yas Marina Circuit, where they submit their cars to the scrutineering judges for the all-important rules and regulations compliance checks. The teams will then build their pit displays, a visual showroom for their vehicle and the work they have put into their R & D, engineering, marketing and sponsorship.

Two intense days of competition follow with the team’s work judged by an experienced panel of judges as well as a tough all-terrain track with rocks, water dips, rope bridges and plenty more obstacles to test the handling and scope of each team’s 4x4.

The finale of the competition is the Awards Gala Dinner where teams will be presented with 18 trophies including the crowning of the World Champions. The teams will then enjoy a day in the desert sampling the culture and cuisine of the region, including falconry displays and Land Rover Defender off-roading.

Nelson Vale, International Project Manager, Land Rover 4x4 in Schools says: “This is our third World Finals and with continued expansion of the programme and growing reputation, we’re attracting more and more students. Our programme is bringing classroom learning to life through practical application that captures the imagination of students. It develops their skills in numerous areas, not only the STEM learning but also confidence, teamwork and social interaction, the foundations needed for any successful career. We look forward to welcoming the students to Abu Dhabi for what promises to be a very exciting event.”

The Land Rover 4x4 in Schools Technology Challenge World Finals takes place with the support from a host of sponsors and supporters including event founder and lead sponsor Jaguar Land Rover and supporting sponsors and partners, The Institution of Engineering and Technology, Engineering in Motion, Denford Ltd and iRob.
